Photographed on May 9, 2005 and featured on Wolf Park’s Photo of the Day page, Chetan, the beta male wolf, lays in the shade avoiding the heat of the noon day sun. Unlike us humans, wolves do not sweat to keep cool. They must seek behavioral means such as avoiding the sun, getting wet in a pond or stream, or simply avoiding any exertion which may cause them to overheat. Panting helps in time of stress, but that mostly just keeps the brain cool.
