Young Kiri Howls
Quantity in Basket: None
To some, the howl of the wolf is an eerie sound, to others it is sad. In reality, the howl is social communication. It is a wolf-to-wolf means of letting pack members know where each wolf is, of rallying the pack (perhaps to go off to hunt) and to defend its territory.
Kiri, about 10 months old, howling along with the rest of the pack. This photo was featured in Science Magazine and was part of an article: Molecular and evolutionary history of melanism in North American gray wolves.
